Child and Adolescent ADHD Assessment
Genuine, Neuroaffirming Assessments That Recognise the Full Spectrum of ADHD
At Insight Therapy Australia, we believe that every child and young person deserves to be truly understood and supported in a way that affirms their unique way of thinking, feeling, and engaging with the world. We offer comprehensive, neuroaffirming ADHD assessments that go beyond outdated, deficit-based models, focusing instead on recognising and embracing the full diversity of ADHD presentations.
Our team has specialist training in conducting ADHD assessments that are strengths-based, affirming, and tailored to each individual. We use up-to-date tools that capture all expressions of ADHD, particularly those that are often overlooked, such as:
- Inattentive & Internalised ADHD Presentations – We recognise that ADHD is not just about hyperactivity. Many children, especially girls and those who mask their difficulties, may experience daydreaming, forgetfulness, overwhelm, and difficulty starting tasks rather than obvious restlessness or impulsivity.
- ADHD in Female & Masked Presentations – Girls and young people assigned female at birth (AFAB) often develop coping mechanisms that mask their ADHD traits, leading to late or missed diagnoses. We are experienced in recognising these more subtle expressions of ADHD.
- ADHD in Gender Diverse & LGBTIQ+ Individuals – We provide a safe, affirming space for all young people, including those who are gender diverse and LGBTIQ+. We recognise that ADHD traits may be misunderstood or overlooked in gender-diverse individuals, and we ensure that our assessments truly reflect their lived experiences.
- Co-Occurring ADHD Presentations – Many children with ADHD may also have additional neurodivergences, such as Autism or learning differences. Our assessments will screen for these additional differences rather than reducing ADHD to a one-size-fits-all model.
A Comfortable, Child-Led Experience—Not Just an ‘Assessment’
We understand that the idea of an ADHD assessment can feel stressful or overwhelming for children and families. That’s why we have created a process that is gentle, engaging, and non-clinical, ensuring that children never feel like they are being tested or judged.
- We create a relaxed, low-pressure environment where children feel safe to be themselves.
- We use playful, interactive, and discussion-based methods rather than rigid, formal tests.
- We gather comprehensive insights from parents, teachers, and self-reports to ensure that children do not feel pressured to “prove” their ADHD traits in a single session.
- We ensure flexibility in how assessments are conducted, ensuring that each child’s unique needs (including extra time, sensory preferences and communication styles) are fully respected.
More Than Just a Report—Practical, Tailored Supports
An ADHD diagnosis is not about a label, it’s about gaining the right support and understanding to thrive. That’s why we go far beyond simply providing a diagnostic report. Every family we work with receives practical, personalised strategies to empower their child and navigate life with confidence.
